Özet: In this talk, we examine the impact of house prices on the dynamics of non-performing loans (NPLs) of Turkish banks between 2008Q1–2019Q4 by ownership. Using fixed effects, and instrumental variable methodologies, we document that NPLs decline as house prices increase at the province level. Moreover, our results imply that the impact of house prices does vary across bank types and loan categories as state banks’ consumer and commercial NPLs are not affected by the house price fluctuations. Our results highlight the importance of monitoring house prices along with conventional measures in assessing the financial health of the banks.
